The Environmental Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in the area of Energy and the Environment. This position has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2018, or later. The appointment will ideally be made at the Assistant Professor level, but appointment at the Associate Professor level will be considered for exceptional candidates.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment in a relevant discipline in the environmental, policy, social or engineering sciences. Specific areas of expertise are open, but may include sustainable and renewable energy, energy production and distribution systems, energy efficiency, energy and transportation, environmental impacts of energy systems, etc. Candidates’ research must investigate issues at the intersection of energy and the environment, with either a domestic or international focus. More senior applicants must have a distinguished publication record, suitable for tenure at a leading research university; junior applicants must show promise of continuing to develop an outstanding publication record. Preferred candidates will have training in multiple disciplines, bridging the science, technology, policy, social and/or equity aspects of energy and the environment, a promising record of extramural research funding, a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentorship, and an interest in research that can be applied in non-academic settings. In addition, a record of engagement in policy processes will be an advantage.
In addition to developing an individual research program, the successful candidate will be expected to serve as a leader of energy initiatives at UCSB, to train graduate students through an affiliation with one or more other UCSB departments, and to teach lower and upper division undergraduate courses on energy and the environment, conventional and renewable energy technologies, and energy policy.
