In our new editorial in Science we discuss the impacts, benefits, and the veil of secrecy around the Lower Tsangpo Hydropower Project that just started construction in the far South-East of Tibet. Once completed in the mid-2030s, the project will be by far the world's power plant, dethroning the current leader, the Three Gorges Dam, by a factor of 3. While the project would generate a lot of low-carbon hydropower, major concerns surround the environmental impacts of that project, particularly in downstream India and Bangladesh. In that light, our editorial calls for more transparency and concerted research efforts to understand the impacts and benefits of what engineers call "the project of the century"
